Are you considering whether childcare franchise ownership is the right opportunity for you? Understanding the requirements to open a childcare franchise can help you determine whether your financial resources, professional experience, and skills align with franchise ownership.

To open a childcare franchise, prospective owners typically need to meet certain financial qualifications, demonstrate strong business and leadership skills, comply with childcare licensing requirements, and be prepared to operate within an established franchise system.

In this article, we'll explore the key financial, operational, and regulatory requirements of opening a childcare franchise, helping you assess whether franchise ownership is the right fit for your goals, experience, and long-term investment strategy.

Who Is Our Ideal Franchisee at The Goddard School®?

The ideal Goddard School franchisee meets the financial and eligibility requirements for ownership and is prepared to operate within The Goddard School franchise system. Beyond these formal requirements, we look for individuals who bring strong leadership, business, communication, and relationship building skills.

Must-Haves:

  • Meet the financial qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency
  • Complete our information request form and qualification process
  • Meet applicable requirements related to school ownership and onsite leadership

What We Look For:

  • Business acumen, including financial management experience
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills
  • Effective communication and relationship-building skills
  • A commitment to children, families, and the local community

Childcare experience and previous business ownership are preferred, but not required. Franchisees come from a variety of professional backgrounds, and The Goddard School provides training, resources, and ongoing support to help franchisees understand their responsibilities within the franchise system.

Net Worth & Liquid Capital Requirements

Most childcare franchises require prospective franchisees to meet minimum net worth and liquidity requirements before they can move forward with ownership. These financial qualifications help franchisors assess whether a candidate has the resources needed to cover startup costs, obtain financing (if applicable), support ongoing operations, and navigate unexpected expenses during the early stages of business ownership.

At The Goddard School, prospective franchisees are required to meet the following financial qualifications:

  • Minimum Liquidity Requirement: $350,000
  • Minimum Net Worth Requirement: $500,000

The amounts for liquidity and net worth will vary depending on your location, transaction, and asset types. We provide prospective franchisees with information about financing resources, including introductions to approved nationwide lender relationships. Availability, terms, and approval are determined by the lender.

Many franchisees also team up with investors or co-owners to help support the investment needed to open a Goddard School. Learn more about Goddard School franchise opportunities and investment levels here.

U.S. Citizenship & Permanent Residency Requirements

To become a Goddard School franchisee, you must be a U.S. citizen or have already obtained your green card (permanent legal resident status).

If you plan to pursue SBA financing for a Goddard School franchise, additional citizenship and residency requirements may apply. Prospective franchisees should review the applicable SBA requirements as part of the financing process.

Qualification & Screening Process

Becoming a Goddard School franchise owner is a guided, six-step process that begins with an initial conversation and application. As part of the process, prospective franchisees share their background, experience, and goals, review and sign the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), complete a financial review, and participate in school tours and leadership interviews.

Prospective franchisees should also be prepared to complete required background checks. As outlined in our 2026 FDD, we obtain a background check, including credit and criminal, on each individual who will have ownership in the franchise.

On-Site Owner Requirements

Every Goddard School must have an onsite owner or operator to provide day-to-day leadership and responsibility for daily operations.

A designated on-site owner is a franchisee who is present and directly accountable for the operation of the school. The school must also have a full-time director and sufficiently trained staff to satisfy applicable state childcare licensing requirements.

Strong Business Acumen

In addition to meeting the requirements for ownership mentioned above, prospective franchisees should be prepared to continue developing the business and leadership skills needed to operate a school.

Prior childcare experience can be helpful, but it is not always required to own a childcare franchise. For example, prior childcare experience is preferred but not required for prospective franchisees interested in The Goddard School.

Instead, strong business acumen and leadership skills are some of the most important qualities The Goddard School looks for in a candidate. Franchisees come from a variety of professional backgrounds, including IT, management, sales, marketing, finance, operations, and entrepreneurship.

For a childcare franchise owner, business acumen may include:

  • Understanding a P&L statement: Knowing how to read revenue, expenses, and operating earnings and using that information to evaluate the performance of the business. See more about how much a Goddard School franchise makes here.
  • Budgeting and financial planning: Creating and managing budgets, planning for expenses, and making thoughtful decisions about where resources should be allocated.
  • Managing labor costs: Understanding staffing needs and how payroll and other labor expenses impact the business while maintaining appropriate staffing levels.
  • Monitoring enrollment and revenue: Recognizing how enrollment affects revenue and understanding the importance of attracting and retaining families.
  • Tracking key performance indicators: Using business metrics to identify trends, understand performance, and determine where improvements may be needed.
  • Managing operating expenses: Keeping a close eye on costs such as payroll, occupancy, supplies, marketing, and other expenses associated with operating a school.
  • Making data-informed decisions: Looking beyond day-to-day operations and using financial and operational information to make decisions that support the long-term health of the business.

As a franchise owner, your role is to lead the business, build a strong team, oversee operations, and support your school's day-to-day operations and long-term development. The Goddard School provides training, resources, and ongoing support to help franchisees operate within the system.

Although prospective franchisees may not be required to have owned a business before, they should demonstrate knowledge in these key areas or a willingness to learn and continue developing their skills. Candidates should be proactive in seeking learning opportunities, building their business knowledge, and continuing to develop the skills needed for franchise ownership.

Strong Leadership & People Management Skills

Owning a childcare franchise also requires strong leadership and people management skills. Franchise owners are responsible for building a strong team, supporting school leadership, and creating an environment where employees can grow and work toward shared goals. These leadership responsibilities may be reflected in activities such as:

  • Hiring and building a strong team: Identifying people who align with the school’s needs and culture.
  • Developing and supporting employees: Providing feedback, setting expectations, and helping team members continue to grow.
  • Delegating effectively: Understanding when to step in and when to empower school leaders and team members to take ownership of their responsibilities.
  • Communicating clearly: Setting expectations and maintaining open communication with employees, families, and other stakeholders.
  • Managing conflict: Addressing challenges professionally and working toward productive solutions.
  • Creating accountability: Establishing clear goals and expectations and following through on them.
  • Leading through change: Staying adaptable and helping the team navigate challenges, growth, or changes within the business.
  • Building relationships: Developing strong relationships with employees, families, and the local community.

Prospective franchisees should be prepared to take an active leadership role in their school. Previous experience managing people can be valuable, but candidates can also demonstrate leadership through experiences in their careers, organizations, or other professional settings.

Relationship Building & Brand Stewardship

Owning a childcare franchise means not only operating a business but also representing an established brand.

At The Goddard School, franchisees should be prepared to serve as brand ambassadors in their local communities, build positive relationships, and work collaboratively with those who contribute to their school and the broader franchise system. Developing and maintaining these connections may involve:

  • Representing the brand: Serving as a positive brand ambassador and maintaining The Goddard School’s standards and reputation within the local community.
  • Building relationships with families: Creating positive interactions and open communication with enrolled and prospective families.
  • Supporting employees: Fostering constructive communication and cooperation with school leadership and team members.
  • Engaging with the local community: Building relationships with local businesses, organizations, vendors, and other community partners.
  • Collaborating within the franchise system: Maintaining positive relationships with Goddard Systems personnel and fellow franchisees while utilizing the resources and support available.
  • Following established systems: Operating within the franchise model and using the processes, tools, and standards established by the franchisor.

Franchisees should be prepared to represent The Goddard School both inside and outside of their school. Building strong relationships with employees, families, the local community, and the broader franchise system can help create a positive experience while protecting and strengthening the brand.

Speaking about her personal experience as a Goddard School franchisee, Jillie Staffiera shared, “Through my time with The Goddard School, we've impacted hundreds and hundreds of children that have passed through our school, while also giving back to causes that matter most to our community.”

Final Thoughts

Opening a childcare franchise involves meeting a combination of financial, operational, and regulatory requirements. While the specific qualifications vary by franchise brand, prospective owners should be prepared to meet financial thresholds, complete the franchisor's evaluation process, comply with applicable childcare licensing requirements, and operate within an established franchise system.

Many childcare franchisors also look for candidates who bring strong business judgment, leadership ability, and communication skills. Owners are often responsible for overseeing financial performance, supporting school leadership, managing relationships with families and employees, and serving as representatives of the brand within their communities.

Although prior childcare experience or business ownership experience may not always be required, prospective franchisees should be prepared to learn, follow established systems, and take an active role in the growth and operation of their business.

For individuals interested in entrepreneurship and supporting local families, childcare franchise ownership may be one option to consider when evaluating business ownership opportunities in the early childhood education sector.
